Our Masia, a converted olive mill, is one of the most beautiful properties in the area and the interior has been carefully designed using a mixture of antiques and modern appliances in the most perfect setting sleeping up to 18 people. Each room has been individually designed and they are all different. The standard of the décor is deliberately at a very high level and includes antique chandeliers, Persian rugs, a 5 metre rustic English oak dining table (which can seat all 18 guests), a baby grand piano from the 1920’s and walls covered with fine art. The extensive grounds of the property are extremely private and there is perimeter fencing encompassing the entire site of over 2 hectares. The facilities include an all year tennis court (with floodlights), outdoor pool, outdoor kitchen and dining area, home cinema, pool/ billiards room, gym, roof terrace, childrens’ playground, and extensive gardens. There is Wi-Fi in all bedrooms, most common areas and the pool and outdoor dining area. The location is outstanding – we are right next to the River Manol and surrounded by luscious countryside but in sight of the Pyrenees and only 20 minutes from the coast. Figueres is only a few kilometres away and the road and rail connections could not be better.

We are also proud that the house is extremely environmentally friendly and sustainable – all our electricity (and more) is generated from our own solar panels. We pump our own water from the natural springs deep below the property and this is filtered and used for drinking as well as the pool and for our irrigation system. The small lake in front of the house is buzzing with wildlife including our own friendly turtles and not so friendly freshwater crayfish! In the last year an otter has taken up residence in the reeds. We have an abundance of fruit trees (apples, pomegranate, lemons, nisperos, figs, plums, apricots, almonds, grapes and of course many olives) as well as many wild plants such as asparagus, strawberries, rosemary and wild garlic. We also have a small market garden where we are currently growing lettuces, tomatoes, onions, chilies and other vegetables according to the season.

The Masia is a personal project for us which adds to the intimacy and the many personal touches that we have added to the house over the years. We like our guests to enjoy the property and the area and have many suggestions and recommendations on restaurants, excursions and the many activities that can be enjoyed during your stay. Although we only started lettings in 2018, the property is becoming increasingly popular with discerning guests who want to book again year after year and we are keen to facilitate that. We personally oversee all the bookings on our behalf and ensure guests get the best possible experience. We also have permanent staff on site to provide hospitality, cooking, cleaning and other agreed services. Rentals are for the entire property only and are generally on a “per week” basis but we will consider long weekend bookings out of the summer season.

In 2023 we were included in Conde Nast Traveller’s “Best Villa’s in Spain”.

LOCATION

We are fortunate to be located in a very quiet and private enclave

We are fortunate to be located in a very quiet and private enclave next to the river and on the edge of a private nature reserve, Palol Sabaldoria which boasts an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. Opposite the house are the high gorges that once funnelled the roaring Manol but which now sprout wild heather, rosemary and bamboo in abundance. You can still swim in the river and there is a bathing pool nearby. There is also a 10 km pathway next to the river taking you to nearby villages and to one of our favourite restaurants, La Tartana – a 20 minute walk to the West side of Vilafant. The area also abounds with wheat and barley fields with some dramatic views of both the sea and the Pyrenees. It is hard to think of anywhere better to be. As well as the outstanding natural beauty of the area, we are very fortunate to be in one of the most fantastic (but less known) regions of Spain – Alt Emporda (or High “Ampurdan”, originally meaning “Empire” as this was the part of the Iberian peninsula which both the Greeks and Romans chose for their base, hence the significant ruins throughout the region). The area really is a hidden spot – it includes the Eastern end of the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava (the “rough coast” on account of its rugged and rocky coastline but it is also bestowed with many fantastic sandy beaches). As well as this outstanding natural topography, we have all the amenities one could wish for nearby, including:

  • Figueres is the capital town of Alt Emporda with a population of around 50,000. It is only 10 minutes away by car. It was the birthplace of Salvador Dali and includes the world famous Dali museum and the San Ferran Castle built in 1753. It has an enticing array of shops, restaurants and bars and a daily fruit and vegetable market.
  • Costa Brava, Empuria Brava and Cadaques: we are spoilt for choice with the regions many beaches, old fishing towns and stunning natural coastal beauty. Empuria Brava is a more modern Spanish Venice with a maze of waterways, moorings and bars, restaurants and beaches. It is only 20 minutes away. The road to Cadaques, an idyllic old shipping town and now chic Spanish gourmet hotspot takes a bit longer, as you climb up and over the mountains but is well worth the trip or take a boat to get there! And there is so much more to see.
  • Girona: capital of the Girona province with a population of 100,000 is about 30 minutes to the South. The medieval cathedral and old town (where part of Game of Thrones was filmed) is spectacular.

OUR BEDROOMS

We have taken great care to ensure our bedrooms are very special
We have taken great care to ensure our bedrooms are very special. They are all different but are exceptionally well equipped and a lot of thought has gone into the layout. Many of them have antique furniture and special art displays, great views and carefully chosen lighting. All of them except one (Manol) have ensuite bath/ shower and WC. Two of the rooms are located outside the main house in the beautiful Garden House with stunning views across the garden. We often find the Garden House is a favourite for families and younger children. We can sleep up to a maximum of 18. We can add travel cots for babies and young children. All rooms have air conditioning. See “Our Bedrooms” for more information

Our amenities

you really don’t need to leave the property at all.

Our amenities

you really don’t need to leave the property at all.

The house has superb amenities which means you really don’t need to leave the property at all. The all-weather tennis court doubles up as a 5-a-side football pitch and has flood lights to allow play at any time, day or night! The oval shaped swimming pool relies on a salt additive system which avoids it smelling and tasting of chlorine. The outdoor kitchen and barbeque area is where a lot of time can be spent in the Summer – the kitchen is fully equipped and the table can be set for the whole party whilst tennis and swimming are enjoyed. We sometimes put up an outdoor marquee for extra shade and hang some hammocks under the mulberry trees by the pool. There is also table tennis, croquet and the outdoor childrens’ playground with slides, swings and see-saws.

In the afternoons and early mornings the large, partially covered roof terrace provides a peaceful environment to lie on a sofa, read a book, do some yoga or pilates, spot the wildlife or watch the other guests in the pool.

Sitting on one of the benches by the mini lake under the willow trees watching the swallows swoop with Canigo, Catalonia’s symbolic mountain in the background is a joy to behold.

Indoors, the home cinema has a large screen, comfy sofas and vintage chairs with a selection of over 200 DVDs and connectivity to your own streaming service including Netflix and Amazon Prime. Next to the cinema, is our own bar area which overlooks the games room with its pool table. Downstairs we have the gym which has a selection of equipment, weights and a punchbag to relieve any stress. In the Living Room there is a large open fire and it is great in the winter place to curl up with a book from our extensive selection of novels, poems and other works in English and Spanish.  There is an abundance of board games stacked in the cupboards. If someone can play the piano (a 1920s baby grand) that completes the ambience.

The main kitchen is built to the design and standard of a professional chef with all the mod cons including induction electric hobs and gas hob, plancha/ hot plate, double oven, steam cooker and Miele coffee machine. You can seat the entire party at the super long banqueting table or outdoors.  By prior arrangement, we can organise for one of the top restaurants in the region to host a gourmet evening at home cooking from our kitchen typically serving 8-10 courses with a tasting menu.

There is ample parking within the property. In 2022 we also had some guests who arrived in a helicopter and the upper lawn served as a perfect Heli-Pad!

A house for all seasons

Whilst the buzz and heat of the summer months and the obvious attractions of the sea resonate for many, the nicest months can often be in the Spring and the Autumn when the days are warm but the afternoon heat is less strong and the crowds are fewer. Sometimes in January we can eat lunch outside, play tennis and dress up to visit the beach and then have a cosy fire in the evening and some home cinema. Christmas and New Year have been popular and increasingly we have enquiries for October, February and May “half terms”.

Our history

Mas Moli Petit

In Romanic times, the River Manol next to the house was much larger and faster flowing than it is now and there was a Romanic settlement which used the power of the river for agriculture and other purposes. The Romanic remains which are barely 50 metres from the property are currently being excavated and are interesting to visit when the site is open. Many years later, two mills were constructed on the river banks – Mas Moli Gran and Mas Moli Petit (Mas is short for Masia which means country house in Catalan and Moli or Molino is the word for a mill). Ours is the smaller of the two, hence the Catalan name, Petit, although in truth it is far from small! Both these mills used the power of the water from the Manol to press the olives picked from the neighbouring fields to make olive oil. You can still see the old stone wheel in the cellar at Mas Moli as well as the tunnels used to funnel the water through the mill. By the mid-20th century, the river had receded and both properties were no longer used as water mills and fell into disrepair. During the 1980’s, Mas Moli was painstakingly restored and extended by the predecessor of the current owners using local masonry, timbers and other original materials combined with splendid interior features designed to match the authenticity of the original mill.

As for our sister property, Mas Moli Gran, an extensive restoration project is underway but as the property is significantly larger, this is expected to take a few years.

The environment is very important to us and we have made significant efforts to ensure the house is run on a carbon zero basis and is sustainable. In recent years we have renewed all of our solar panels and these now provide all of the property’s electricity requirements and we even export significant amounts of solar energy to the national grid. All our water emanates from the natural spring below the property and this is used carefully and sustainably. We have a high quality filter for converting the water into potable form and it tastes fantastic. We have a growing number of fruit trees – every year we try to plant at least half a dozen or more. Our seasonal home grown fruit and vegetables will often be available for guests to eat but it depends on the season and how well they are doing! We do not use any insecticides or chemicals on any of our home grown produce.

Yoga retreat

Yoga

The Masia lends itself naturally to groups who want to organise a yoga retreat. In particular the roof terrace which receives morning and afternoon sun is a favourite spot for those seeking Zen. The house also has a spiritual quietness and a connection with nature which makes it an ideal choice. We would normally recommend whole groups with yoga teachers and leaders organised by the party but can assist in facilitating this.

Parties & Weddings

Parties and Weddings

Our general policy is that we do not permit parties or gatherings for anyone other than those who are registered as guests. However, we are prepared to discuss specific arrangements for parties and wedding receptions for an agreed price and these have been very successful in the past as the property lends itself to accommodating these events with its large open spaces and the fact that it is located in a relatively remote and private location.

The MMP ethos

The MMP Ethos

We are very proud of our Masia. We have strived to create a house which has exquisite features and which is fun to visit and to relax in and enjoy in one of the most magical areas of the world (which is still relatively “undiscovered” in terms of tourist destinations). We would like you to enjoy it too (but don’t tell too many people!).

Security

Security

The property is occupied/monitored at all times by our onsite staff and we also have various security systems in place. The entire perimeter of the property has secure fencing and there are electric gates and a remote entry system.  There is a safe available for valuable items.

Coming Soon...

Coming Soon

Every year we continue to improve Mas Moli Petit. In recent years we have added a massage/ treatment room and refurbished the swimming pool changing room, carried out a full upgrade of the gym with new equipment, refurbished the Cottage and installed new decking for the outdoor dining area. Plus new fruit trees, flowers and plants every year!
